To many, breakfast is made for slow sips and meaningful bites. Dubbed as the most important meal of the day by scientists, we believe it’s equally important to soundtrack correctly. To help find those sounds perfect for early sunrises or bleak rainy days, we’ve enlisted two creative polymath’s in their own right, Etapp Kyle and Luka Sabbat, to curate an intricate list of soundtracks to help kick start your day.
Recently spending time together in LA, both names are renowned across the creative spheres for their intricate music tastes, Etapp a renowned DJ and producer generally associated with a functional yet atmospheric sound, and Luka a hardcore music guru who you’ll find front row at concerts anywhere from Björk to Aphex Twin, whilst heading up his newly found debut clothing line ‘Marking Distance’.
From the echoing sounds of Autechre to the nostalgic Italo disco notes of the late Phil Gerus, dig through the tracks below to help start your day on the right note.
Luka Sabbat: Between Sleeps – “Peak”
“The slow cinematic build of this track is really amazing, when you get to the peak of the song, it goes back down. At first I was expecting for a beat to drop but was pleasantly surprised when it peacefully ended.”
Etapp Kyle: CC:DISCO! Ft. Confidence Man – “Chez Moi (Waiting For You) – Spray’s ‘Witching Hour’ Mix”
“I received this beauty as a promo in October and played it the next day at Berghain during my opening set. It was a personal highlight, and I decided to include it in the playlist. Moreover, I see it as a perfect continuation from Luka’s opener. Spray’s productions are always exceptional!”
Luka Sabbat: Autechre – “Eutow”
“This absolute banger of a track is one of my favorites of all time. The electronic sounds scattered through with this breakbeat style drop makes me want to drive for some reason.”
Etapp Kyle: Repeat – “Silver”
“Some UK vibes here. An amazing collaboration between The Black Dog, Mark Broom and Dave Hill. I absolutely love the vibe of this track and how well it executed (I suspect it’s one take recording of a live jam). I discovered this record relatively recently while digging through some old records and it barely leaves my playlists now.”
Luka Sabbat: Tracey – “Testarossa”
“This song is funky, groovy and has some familiar classic sounds that makes it quite timeless while remaining quite new. And it makes me want to dance.”
Luka Sabbat: Rod Modell – “Kingston”
“I love the ambience of this track, it takes just enough space in any room it’s played it. It isn’t intrusive, you can still bop your head to it, But also have a conversation through it.”
Etapp Kyle: Ducati Flux – “Circa”
“A few months ago, I played a b2b set with my lovely wife, Daria Kolosova, at a festival in Spain. On the way back to the hotel, our driver had some really good downtempo music playing in the car. It turned out he is a DJ, and the music was a recording of his set. I completely lost it when he dropped this track, so I asked him to share the ID.”
Etapp Kyle: Phil Gerus – “If You Say I Would, I Should”
“Here’s an absolutely next-level production masterpiece by Phil Gerus, an incredibly talented producer who tragically passed away earlier this year in a car accident. I highly recommend checking out his entire discography.”
Luka Sabbat: Conforce – “Blue Note”
“What I love about this song is that little sound in the background, reminds me of water droplets or something of the sort. The song has quite a relaxing energy while still being quite energetic.”
Etapp Kyle: Kareem Lotfy – “Fr3sh”
“Not much to say here. Just one of my favourite ambient tracks ever and a perfect closure of the playlist!”
