London-based, Athens-born experimental electronic multi-hyphenate MarcelDune continues to make serious waves across Europe, thanks to their innate production techniques and unique sonics which are widely renowned for fusing modular synthesisers, analog and digital sounds, alongside captivating vocals. Whether taking inspiration from their jazz studies and opera singing, or Athenian street culture, MarcelDune channels the raw energy and authenticity into music, making for unique auditory experience capturing the essence of a society seeking liberation from oppression, frustration, and societal norms.

For their latest release, MarcelDune has taken to SPFDJ’s coveted imprint Intrepid Skin, for an EP packed with heaters direct from the scuzziest corners of the rave. From title track “Buy Success”, which brandishes raw serrated edges and an industrial core whilst never losing the groove, to “Romantic and Other Fantasies”, which lays down some weighty percussion and a madhouse of effects, the project sees the London-based DJ/producer hone in on the ethos that underpins their aesthetic, with touches of euphoria, huge drums, and quintessential fun.

We caught up with MarcelDune following the release of Buy Success

How’s this year been for you?

Chaotic but extremely interesting! I learned so much about myself, met great people along the way, and feel grateful for both the good and bad times. It felt like escaping a long isolation, but now it seems like everything is set. Excited for 2025!

To a first time listener of MarcelDune, how would you describe your sound and style?

Groovy, enigmatic, melodic and dance…

Musically, who and what have been some of your main influences on your career so far?

Currently, I’m so mesmerised by Old School Techno and Groovy House—this kind of grumpy, repetitive dance music from the ’90s and early ’00s is giving me so much life! But I’m always inspired by Jazz music and its modes. I studied Jazz music at the Athens Conservatory, and it will always be my first love. Rhythm changes, that blue note, or maybe the 7th—they will always be my biggest inspirations on my personal journey into music.

Your forthcoming EP ‘Buy Success’ is a wicked record. Firstly, what’s the story behind the name?

Appreciate that! ‘Buy Success’ was quite sarcastic as a title I wanted to challenge the stereotypes by questioning the reality of living in a society that values a conservative lifestyle—one that operates under hierarchical structures, gender inequality, power dynamics, and class—over freedom, gender equality, and diversity. The concept of ‘Buy Success’ came from my frustration with how challenging it is to break into a world that doesn’t support diversity, especially if you don’t come from a place of privilege. Claiming spaces in a patriarchal society is a constant struggle.

Can you tell us more about the main inspirations/ overall influences behind the record?

At that moment, my influences came from old-school techno and house music. I wanted to translate my understanding of that world into my music, but I also wanted to address other aspects of life that matter to me—like gender liberation and equality for marginalised groups.

What can listeners expect sonically?

An emotional roller coaster, I guess.

What was the overall creative and production process behind the release? Did you have to overcome any challenges?

I wanted to create something less experimental but with substance—something with a bit of juice! I also wanted to finally use my voice in a dance track, but in a more lyrical way, rather than just relying on chopped-up vocal samples here and there. I believe that approach is very challenging.

If you had to pick a favourite track from ‘Buy Success’, which one would it be and why?

I cried so much while producing “Romantic And Other Fantasies” because it meant so much to me—and it still does. But at the same time, it was quite relieving. It felt like, ‘Now I’ve said it. I need to move on—and do it!’ However, “Tell Me Who Are They” is really the one I love. It’s fun, and it has this jazz-mode chord that drives me absolutely mad in love.

Released on SPFDJ’s Intrepid Skin imprint, how did this relationship first come about?

I’ve always admired and respected the aesthetic and curation that SPFDJ has upheld—literally forever! I’m so glad they gave me the space to explore my ideas and allowed me to be part of a label that truly supports diversity in all its forms. Our relationship started with pure admiration, then evolved through some similar lineups, progressed to inbox exchanges, and quickly escalated to creating music! I’m extremely happy and honoured to be on this journey.

Could you spotlight some other Greek talent for us to keep an eye on next year?

I love this underground Dub Plate Greek record label named ‘MOREGENRES’ curated by Simos Ares. And I also love ANNĒ and ATÉ! Please check them all out, if you haven’t yet, they are extremely talented and inspiring!

What’s next for MarcelDune?

Planning touring soon and a new album!
