New Balance Japan has teamed up with Japanese collective Sashiko Gals on Crafted for the Future, a new collaboration celebrating traditional hand-stitching through an ultra-limited release.
The project features hand-finished versions of the iconic Made in U.S.A. 1300JP sneaker alongside matching premium varsity jackets. Based in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, Sashiko Gals is a group of women artisans formed after the Great East Japan Earthquake, known for applying intricate sashiko embroidery to contemporary footwear. Here, the 1300JP is fully covered in handmade fabric patches, stitched in white, orange and indigo thread, with the same technique carried onto the jackets.
Just two pairs of sneakers and four jackets will be released via a charity lottery at New Balance Harajuku, with all proceeds donated to Moonshot Inc. to support the future of sashiko craftsmanship.
