Maara has released her new album Ultra Villain, a narrative-led project that sees the multi-hyphenate explore themes of desire, heartbreak, obsession and the freedom that comes with choosing yourself.
Blending elements of trip-hop, IDM, alternative R&B and leftfield pop, the album places emphasis on storytelling and vocal intimacy while retaining Maara’s rhythmic weight and detailed sound design. Tracks such as “A Moving Blur” and the title cut address the emotional fallout of unbalanced relationships, while more experimental moments, including “Obsessive Compulsion,” explore intrusive thought patterns and emotional intensity.
Written largely in Montreal during a period of personal upheaval and later shaped by Maara’s relocation to Berlin, Ultra Villain reflects a tension between familiarity and disruption. The album closes with “Come Home,” completed ahead of Maara’s debut live performance at MUTEK Montréal in 2024, marking a moment of creative return.
