French artist Oklou has announced her first film score, composing original music for In Waves, a California surf-themed animated feature directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen and based on AJ Dungo’s acclaimed graphic memoir.
Created and performed alongside fellow French musician ROB, the score blends orchestral, electronic and pop elements, mirroring the film’s emotional range, from youthful intensity and escapism to anxiety and illness.
Oklou attended the film’s world premiere at Cannes Critics’ Week, where she also performed The Beatles’ “Get Back” during the festival’s opening ceremony alongside French pop artist Theodora, with production by SebastiAn, in tribute to Peter Jackson’s honorary Palme d’Or recognition.
Oklou has additionally been named a Critics’ Week jury member this year, joining filmmaker Payal Kapadia, actor Théodore Pellerin, producer Ama Ampadu and journalist Donsaron Kovitvanitcha. The announcement follows Oklou’s recent North American tour run, including her Coachella debut and two sold-out Terminal 5 shows in New York, ahead of summer festival dates including Primavera Sound, We Love Green, Lollapalooza and All Points East.
