Southend rapper Joe James has announced his debut album, The Ends, Never Ends, set for release on 10th July via Neighbourhood.
Alongside the announcement, James has shared the album’s lead single, “Back Together,” accompanied by a striking black-and-white video featuring his mother. One of the record’s most personal tracks, “Back Together” reflects on James’ upbringing in Southend, exploring family estrangement and the challenges of growing up with undiagnosed neurodivergence.
The Ends, Never Ends marks a major milestone for James, tackling themes of trauma, family, class, masculinity and survival across a richly textured soundscape shaped alongside producers Remy Jones, Micha Cooper, Felix Joseph, AOD and Callum Waddington. Influenced by artists spanning blues, jazz, grime and alternative R&B, the album blends live instrumentation with deeply reflective songwriting.
The project also sees James take on a greater production role, working closely with collaborators to craft its musical identity. Live drums, saxophone contributions from Grammy-winning musician Venna, and guest appearances from Lancey Foux, Dave, Loyle Carner, Astrønne, Hak Baker, KB and Raws further underline the album’s expansive vision.
Speaking on the album, James explained: “This album isn’t for the club. It’s not dance music. I wanted it to sound abstract, jazzy and soulful. It’s something you listen to while driving, walking, sitting on the tube with your headphones on. Smoke a spliff, ride your bike, go up a mountain, that type of feeling.”
