Swedish duo MAMI UMAMI have released new single “(Don’t) think I like you”, co-produced with Alex Lopez, a high-octane release built around the overwhelming rush of being left behind.
Across the track, Jaquelin Elamiri (Miss Mami) and Leonard Furby move through the stages of grief after their respective partners left for long-distance jobs, from denial and anger through to a synth-charged sense of acceptance. It follows the duo’s AFTERwork EP, released earlier this year via Bad Wednesday.
Speaking on the release, the duo explained: “This song basically wrote itself in our shared heads in about 20 minutes after our partners had left us for work in other cities. Of course, we were incredibly happy for them — they’d both gotten amazing job offers. But no matter how happy we were for them, the sadness of being without them was huge.
Somewhere along the way, the ego takes over, and the sadness turns into this weird, completely unclear and totally unjustified kind of anger that says: I CAN DO THIS ON MY OWN AND, I (DON’T) THINK I LIKE YOU ANYWAY..
The parentheses in the title are the whole feeling. The love is actually bigger than ever, and all you really want is to be in the same room as the person you love. Sometimes, though, a sweaty studio and a friend to talk to will have to be enough.”
Based in Malmö, MAMI UMAMI have built a reputation for creating a genre-blurring sound shaped by life in a hyperconnected world, moving between control and chaos since their 2024 debut, Söndagsångest. The duo have built a reputation as a compelling live act, playing festivals including Roskilde and Way Out West this year, with a further date ahead at Viva Sounds in November.
